Jigeen Ni

Women! is said in Wolof Jigeen Ni. It is the name that five young Senegalese women have chosen for their all-female orchestra. From the practice of music, they say they draw a deep joy, a vital energy, a freedom of being that they want to communicate. And despite the difficulties they have to overcome to bring this artistic practice into their daily lives, despite the prejudices they face, they are not ready to give up!

Will they manage to support their orchestra when they must first ensure their livelihood? Will they succeed in playing a role of collective emulation for many other women, as they wish, in a society where roles and places are still traditionally assigned?
